Canine Wellness:
Microchip Identification

Each year more than 10 million pets are lost, and of those more than half end up in
shelters without collars or tags.

We recommend the Home Again Microchip Identification system to help insure your pet’s safe return. This involves injecting a small microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, into the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades. This can be done at the time your pet is under anesthesia to be spayed or neutered, or at any time under a mild sedative. For microchipped dogs, one out of eight owners have had to use the recovery service to retrieve their lost pet.

When a pet arrives at the shelter, a special hand held scanner — similar to the ones used at the supermarket — is passed over the animal’s shoulder blades. The scanner can read the identification code of the microchip below the skin surface.
